How to travel as a vet student

Updated: Dec 12, 2019

I often get asked, how I manage to travel as a vet student. How I can have the time and the money to do so. I decided to make a post to tell people some of my tricks to help me travel around and make the time.

1. Make the time

Many people know that vet students are really busy. You have class every day with labs and practicals and so much more. Not to mention all the time you need to study to keep up with what they are teaching you in class. That leaves you time to do your normal every day things and have a hobby or two. Like rugby or some other sport, or maybe art. I would say you can have time for a hobby or two to give some stress relief from school. But traveling is slightly different. You need to pack up and go somewhere and you need to make the time. It can be a weekend, week off for break, or just an hours drive away. You just need to make the decision that you enjoy traveling and it is what you are going to do.

2. Pick the place

I am really flexible this way. I just love to travel and see new places. Sure, I have a list of places I want to go, but I don't care what order. Which is handy when you only have a weekend or a short time, you can use some great websites to find cheap flights. Not having a set place means you can look at a few and pick the cheapest option for the time that you have free. Then you book it and you are excited to be off! Rather than picking the place first and being sad when you can't afford it.

3. Paying for it.

Now this is the hardest part for almost everyone. We all would (Fill in the blank) more if we just had more money. For me this is traveling. I would love to travel all the time and forget about some of my adult responsibilties from time to time. But, unfortunately these things cost money. So how do I pay to travel. Well, there are a lot of ways. I am pretty good at saving my money because traveling is a good motivator for me. I know if I don't splurge on eating out a lot, I can put that towards eating a meal in a place I have never been before. Or if I just cut back on other things I can pay for the plane ticket to get me to where I want to go. So I save from my normal job to help me travel. I also volunteer for different organizations to help me have connections. I make a lot of friends while I travel as well which gives you someone to travel with as well as a tour guide and possible friend to stay with when you visit. There is a way to travel cheap, you just have to know how. I don't stay in high end hotels. This doesn't mean I don't like them, I just know I can do more activities and have more fun if I pay a little less for where I am staying. Hostels work great and there are some good budget hotels as well. Just read the reviews before you book.

Then Make it Happen!! You just gotta decide your gonna do it, and then you just go. Even if you aren't 100% sure if its gonna be ok. Plan it out and then go for it.
